Becker woke feeling somewhat disoriented. He opened one eye and saw that the grey of early dawn was just morphing into actual daylight and that his beloved alpha was sleeping beside him, Ryan's face slack and relaxed. Becker felt a slight twinge in his stomach and settled one hand on his pregnant belly that was probably expanding again by the feel of it.

It should have been peaceful but somehow Becker was restless.

He turned around on his other side and peered at the clock on the night stand. It was just after 5 a.m., too early for his usual morning routine but too late to go back to sleep. He decided to take a leak and have a slow start, maybe prepare a big healthy breakfast for the family as a surprise. He shuffled upright slowly and then had to sit still for a moment when a wave of dizziness washed over him. He squeezed his eyes closed and waited for it to pass.

Becker had a hard time battling the button of his jeans after his check-up. He was almost four weeks along now and he was starting to show. He'd been reluctant to share the news of his pregnancy widely so far, partly because he knew some people would be bloody judgemental and partly because he'd secretly been afraid something might go wrong. He couldn't put it off any longer now.

Becker had felt like shit ever since the last vestiges of his pseudo-heat had subsided.

Yes, pseudo-heat. Just a fluke. Fake.

Apparently, it was the first sign of his upcoming menopause, several years before the average omega experienced it. Ditzy and the omega specialist the medic had made him see agreed that it was probably the years of suppressant abuse and stress catching up with him. Apparently the omegan body really wasn't designed for it. Omegas weren't made for strain like this.

In other words: it was Becker's own fault.

It was a truth universally acknowledged that Connor was annoying.

He was nerdy. He was excitable. He regularly blurted out what he was thinking without a filter. He had a tendency to get obsessed with topics that interested him. He was socially awkward and his fashion choices were slightly eccentric.

He was annoying the people around him.

He knew that.

So he vowed that this year, he would change.

He'd restrain his excitement, put on a calm demeanour and only speak up when asked or if he had something substantial to contribute. He wouldn't harass everyone with what he was researching all the time and he would dress more casually and in muted colours. He wouldn't overwhelm the people around him with his personality.

He would become someone they would like and enjoyed having around. And maybe Cutter wouldn't look at him with disappointment in his eyes anymore.

Becker and Ryan sat on the couch and stared at the telly unseeingly. Their hands were clasped tight together, their hold on one another almost painful.

Becker's gaze darted to the clock on the wall. Quarter to ten. Still fifteen minutes until curfew. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He felt Ryan squeeze his hand to relax him.

„It's going to be okay, Beck. They're good kids. They won't do anything stupid.“

„Yes!“ Becker exclaimed. „Exactly. They're still kids. We never should have agreed to this. They're way too young to start dating!“

Ryan chuckled. „We can't keep him locked away, Beck. I know you just worry for him but if we lock him in he'll just rebel harder.“

The site reloaded and the order form appeared again. Empty.

Ryan stared. He filled out the form again and pressed „Submit“.

Ryan narrowed his eyes at the empty-again order form, and tried again.

Error.

The muscles in his jaws worked. Another try.

Error.

His right eye started to twitch. He tried again.

Error.

The door flew open and Lyle stuck his head in. „What's taking so bloody long?“

Ryan exploded.

Marcus came to when the sun started to tickle his face. He snuffled a couple of times but the funny feeling in his nose wouldn't go away. Still half asleep, his own sudden sneeze startled him awake completely.

He took a moment to process the reality of a new day and then stretched lazily in his comfy basket and enjoyed the quiet for another a minute or two. Often enough, his rumbustious siblings would practically jump on him or paw his face before he had a chance to wake up on his own. Not today though. Kay and Alex were still snuggled up together and snoring, having made a fuss yesterday, looking forward to their trip.

Oh! Their trip!

Anticipation rose in Marcus and there was no way he could lie still any more. If he could get everyone up now, they could get going sooner!

Connor pushed those thoughts away. His father had no right to ruin this for him.

Becker wished he had paid more attention during class at school. Maybe he’d be a better father to his pups if he had. But with Ryan by his side, they’d manage.
