Author: isamazed
Word count: approx. 1,300
Characters: Becker/Ryan, Ditzy, mention of Stringer and the pups
Rating: T

Disclaimer: Primeval belongs to Impossible Pictures. I only write for fun…
A/N: Written for knitekat's Valentine's Day Gift Box 2022 on
primeval_denial. The prompts I used were 1) Whatever you were going to say, the answer is 'no'. and 2) Half the names on the list had already been crossed off.
The pups (and pup!verse) belong to fififolle. Ditzy and Stringer belong to
fredbassett. Thanks everyone for lending them out!
Also, massive thanks to fredbassett for another fic beta'ed by her!
Also, pup!verse is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. So I thought it would be fun to send their world into upheaval again ;-)
This follows on from What To Expect. However, the storyline started with Unexpected Circumstances.
“There's no way you're going on field trips until you've squeezed those pups out, boss.” Ditzy gave Becker a no-nonsense look.
Becker opened his mouth to reply but Ditzy held up a hand and continued, “Whatever you were going to say, the answer is 'no'!”
“Okay,” Becker agreed.
“Okay?” Ditzy narrowed his eyes in suspicion. “You're not going to fight me on this?”
“No.” Becker smiled at him happily and rested one hand on his still mostly flat belly.
“Huh.” Ditzy was stunned. He turned to look at Ryan who was standing next to his omega and had a hard time not to grin. “Is he a pod person and the real Becker’s lost through an anomaly?”
“No.” Ryan mimicked the tone of Becker's earlier response and could hardly contain his chuckle at the complicated movements on Ditzy's face.
“Okay, then there's nothing else for us to discuss here. You,” he poked Becker's chest with his finger, “remain glued to your desk and if you behave, maybe I'll allow you to do the press conferences.”
Becker groaned. Now that sounded like torture, and nothing like a reward for good behaviour. Of course, Ditzy ignored him.
“And you,” The medic bestowed the same treatment upon Ryan, “will watch over him like a hawk. If he so much as twitches in discomfort, I want to you to see a medic – any medic – immediately.”
“Okay,” they agreed in unison.
“Get out of here now, you're keeping me away from patients that really need me,” Ditzy grumbled, eyeing them hard.
They grinned at each other at the distrustful look on Ditzy's face and made to leave. Just as they reached the door, Ditzy called after them. “I'll be watching you!”
They laughed out loud and exited the infirmary.

Three weeks later found Becker bored out of his mind. There had been a historic lull in anomalies.
He'd done any inventory he could think of – okay, he might have checked the armoury twice – and he'd made sure their filing was exemplary. Their stocks weren't lacking one single item. Between
Stringer, Ryan and him, they'd been fighting over who'd get to write the one report on the five-second anomaly they'd had a few days ago. Stringer won on merits by having checked out the site.
Becker had even asked Connor if he could help on his side of things but after half an hour of technobabble he'd decided that death by boredom was the lesser evil and high tailed it out of there. At least, Ryan and Stringer could keep themselves busy by chasing their teams through boot camp style training exercises. Becker didn't get diversions like that with his pregnancy.
Becker rubbed his now quite obviously protruding belly – apparently it was true that you gained girth more quickly with a second pregnancy – and wished he could at least bend down to tie his own fucking shoes. He didn't even dare dream of going for a run or anything.
He entertained the thought of checking in with Cutter or Danny but decided he was nowhere near self-destructive enough to voluntarily subject himself to their special kind of crazy.
And so he ended up researching baby names.
With the triplets, their choice had been rather spontaneous. He'd read a baby names book even back then but more out of curiosity and the weird fascination at some of the more obscure choices.
But this time, it was different.
During his first pregnancy Becker had gone through a lot of anxiety and feared that life as he knew it would end. This time, everything was different.
Becker was happy. He was content.
Since the morning sickness – all-day sickness, more like it – had subsided, he enjoyed the shit out of being pregnant.
Ryan looked at him full of love and wonder all the time. Their trio was so excited about getting siblings that they had practically taken over all the chores between the three of them. They'd already set up a babysitting schedule, bless them. And Becker's father dropped off his most delicious culinary creations at least twice a week.
All Becker had to do was gestate their two pups. He was...
Bored.
Yes, naming their pups in a sensible way was a priority but he'd never seen himself making organised lists of male and female names, their meaning and pro/cons.
But, bored.
He stared at the list on his screen. Half the names on it had already been crossed off again. Too extravagant, too much risk for idiotic nicknames, or either Ryan or he had decided they didn't like one or the other after all.
The remaining names were all good. They both liked them, people around the globe would most likely be able to pronounce them independent from their primary language, and they were neither too fashionable nor too traditional.
But none of them felt right.
He sighed.
The door opened and Ryan came in.
“Oh god, please tell me there's been an anomaly and you need me to write a 50-page report,” Becker pleaded.
“No.” Ryan laughed. He nodded towards the computer. “You still obsessing over names?”
“I don't know how other omegas do it. Did I just miss out on some genes? Isn't there supposed to be some magical fit or something?” Becker complained.
“I wouldn't know.” Ryan shrugged. “I think we did all right with the triplets. Why don't we wait until they arrive and see what feels right when we see them?”
“We could,” Becker agreed. “But I would feel better this time if we at least had a small selection. It just sucks that we don't even know whether to focus on girls' or boys’ names.”
“Well, we could always go with gender-neutral names, Hilary,” Ryan grinned.
Becker stared at him. Hard.
“Or not,” Ryan laughed.
“I don't even know why I love you sometimes,” Becker grumbled.
“I love you too, babe.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Now you're just placating the omega. Don't think I don't notice, alpha dearest.”
“I would never.” Ryan grinned again. “All kidding aside, why don't we just go with the flow? We can keep the list, add or remove a name or two and then see if our little ones look more like a Danny or a Nick.”
“There's no way they'll look like either of that at all,” Becker grunted. “Don't insult our genes.” He sighed again. “You're right. We're good with the unplanned stuff. Never change a working system, right?”
“Right,” Ryan agreed and leaned over to press a kiss on Becker's lips.
The ADD started blaring and he turned to jog out of the room.
“Save the freaking report for me, alpha!” Becker shouted after him.
