Becker woke feeling somewhat disoriented. He opened one eye and saw that the grey of early dawn was just morphing into actual daylight and that his beloved alpha was sleeping beside him, Ryan's face slack and relaxed. Becker felt a slight twinge in his stomach and settled one hand on his pregnant belly that was probably expanding again by the feel of it.

It should have been peaceful but somehow Becker was restless.

He turned around on his other side and peered at the clock on the night stand. It was just after 5 a.m., too early for his usual morning routine but too late to go back to sleep. He decided to take a leak and have a slow start, maybe prepare a big healthy breakfast for the family as a surprise. He shuffled upright slowly and then had to sit still for a moment when a wave of dizziness washed over him. He squeezed his eyes closed and waited for it to pass.

“Okay?” Ditzy narrowed his eyes in suspicion. “You're not going to fight me on this?”

“No.” Becker smiled at him happily and rested one hand on his still mostly flat belly.

Becker had a hard time battling the button of his jeans after his check-up. He was almost four weeks along now and he was starting to show. He'd been reluctant to share the news of his pregnancy widely so far, partly because he knew some people would be bloody judgemental and partly because he'd secretly been afraid something might go wrong. He couldn't put it off any longer now.

It was... Wow.

Ryan had been shocked – still was, to be honest – but he couldn't deny that the idea of little paws on the floor and extended furry cuddling sessions wasn't enticing.

Becker had felt like shit ever since the last vestiges of his pseudo-heat had subsided.

Yes, pseudo-heat. Just a fluke. Fake.

Apparently, it was the first sign of his upcoming menopause, several years before the average omega experienced it. Ditzy and the omega specialist the medic had made him see agreed that it was probably the years of suppressant abuse and stress catching up with him. Apparently the omegan body really wasn't designed for it. Omegas weren't made for strain like this.

In other words: it was Becker's own fault.

Becker went through the motions of what was just another crazy morning routine, preparing the kids' breakfast – they were teenagers now and still he was stuck making them breakfast because if he didn't they'd only shovel candy-coloured cereals in their mouths and perish a slow death by sugar by the time they turned 20, for fuck's sake – and then ushered them out the door to go to school.

Luckily, this morning brought minimal quarrels and near obedience because they had a maths test coming up in first period. Thank god for small mercies.

I saw the drama unfold about a half second before it happened.

And it was all my fault.

I had made my way to Connor's lab to tell him about the last minute „invitation“ (order, more like) from the minister to some fancy schmoozing dinner that evening. I knew Connor would be stupidly excited about this while I had no interest in buttering up some Sirs and Dames of questionable merits.

The door to the lab swooshed open quietly and I spotted Connor with his back turned to me, precariously standing on his desk chair, one leg lifted into the air for balance and the opposite arm stretched out wide to reach for something on the chaotic mountain of metal and wires that was his equipment shelve.

„Connor! What on earth are you doing? You're going to break your neck!“

Becker threw the letters he'd just fished out of the mailbox onto the coffee table and trudged back to the kitchen in the search of beer. The day had been fairly easy, just office tasks and giving a welcome speech to the small group of new recruits on the security team, but he was still a little moody and was feeling sorry for himself.

Only one more week until Christmas and everybody was all heart-eyes and mistletoe and looking forward to spending the holidays with their partners and families while Becker was alone and would cover a couple of shifts during the festive days. Not that he minded per se – as the CO he should role model in fairness take his share of the shitty shifts – but it would be nice to have someone to come home to afterwards and spend his off-time with. And maybe cuddle a little.

Becker's gaze darted to the clock on the wall. Quarter to ten. Still fifteen minutes until curfew. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He felt Ryan squeeze his hand to relax him.

„It's going to be okay, Beck. They're good kids. They won't do anything stupid.“

„Yes!“ Becker exclaimed. „Exactly. They're still kids. We never should have agreed to this. They're way too young to start dating!“

Ryan chuckled. „We can't keep him locked away, Beck. I know you just worry for him but if we lock him in he'll just rebel harder.“

Danny stared at the small black and white photograph of his grandparents. His grandmother had never tired of telling the story of their meet-cute and love at first sight.

Even beyond 40, Danny was secretly still hoping he'd find that kind of love one day. After Patrick's disappearance he'd always had trouble maintaining a relationship. After a while, his partners always complained that he wasn't in it with his whole heart and that there was a ghost in their relationship.

His mind wandered to the man who had recently caught his eye. As a soldier, he probably had his own ghosts. He was still young – probably too young for Danny – but it was clear they'd both lived through a lot. He had certainly sparked an interest in Danny that he hadn't felt for in a long time. And not just because he was almost too handsome to be true.

Marcus came to when the sun started to tickle his face. He snuffled a couple of times but the funny feeling in his nose wouldn't go away. Still half asleep, his own sudden sneeze startled him awake completely.

He took a moment to process the reality of a new day and then stretched lazily in his comfy basket and enjoyed the quiet for another a minute or two. Often enough, his rumbustious siblings would practically jump on him or paw his face before he had a chance to wake up on his own. Not today though. Kay and Alex were still snuggled up together and snoring, having made a fuss yesterday, looking forward to their trip.

Anticipation rose in Marcus and there was no way he could lie still any more. If he could get everyone up now, they could get going sooner!

And immediately, he feels guilty. A good omega wouldn’t think that. He should be happy they’re fine and growing like weed; it was close enough. If only their appetite was sated.

“So, what are we going to do with three full days without any anomalies?”, Ryan grinned.

“I can’t believe that Lester actually approved of both of us taking off three consecutive days,” Becker said.

“I think he sees it as a test run for our upcoming holiday. God, I can’t even begin to tell you how much I look forward to spending our days on the beach and diving,” the content smile returned on Ryan’s face.

“And in bed?”

“And in bed,” Ryan confirmed.

“So how about us using the bank holiday weekend as a test run, too?”, Becker smirked.

The plane quickly gained speed and then it was leaving the ground.

“It’s nice to be on a plane to travel to a holiday destination for once. The last few times I’ve been on a plane always were for one mission or another,” Ryan contemplated.

Becker gently squeezed his hand. “Not this time. The only thing you’re going to fight in the next two weeks is your food coma.”

“Bless Jess for suggesting this small island without mobile connection or a landline.”

“She’s a star.”

The excursion on the other side of the anomaly had gone surprisingly well. Connor and Abby had their samples, photos, lots of notes and now they were headed back. Everything had gone like clockwork. Except that the anomaly was already flickering when it came into view.

“Run!” Becker screamed and ushered them forwards. “Faster!”

His heart beat so loudly, he almost couldn’t hear the sound of their feet hitting the ground. The pulsation of the anomaly quickened. Becker’s heart sank. Just a few more steps and he pushed first Abby, then Connor through the ball of light.

If you’d ask Lester that wouldn’t be the truth. Of course, each of them had at least one day off a week, even though Stringer was off to a mission in some unknown place. And, yes, it was true. But it was also true that this never happened to be the same day for Becker and Ryan, considering they were both captains and lacking one of their rank at the ARC. And they’d always been on call on their days off. And sure enough, there’d always been an emergency and they got called in.

He stays close to the wall as he carefully makes his way to the room with the half-open door from where he can hear a soft noise. He’s tense, trying not make a sound and startle the creature in there.

That’s when, despite his wary steps, his foot comes down on something lying on the floor, and he slips. A flashing light blinds him and something red charges towards him.

“What’s up, Becker? Come back to bed,” Jess mumbles.
