It actually is cuddle pollen. No bacteria, fungus or mysterious future life form. Plain old pollen. What Matt’s (Anderson, Matt – the Ice Prince – not Rees, Matt – too-good-to-be-true Matt, Connor’s Matt) analysis hasn’t answered, though, is the exact type of plant they had to watch out for in the future to avoid more incidences. So, Connor is going to find out.

Nodding to himself, he glances to either side of the corridor and when he is sure he is still alone, he quickly holds his access bracelet to the scanner next to the door to Matt’s lab. Of course, Connor doesn’t have access rights to that room. He snickers when the door slides open silently. It definitely has its perks being a tech geek.

“Boss? The silent alarm for one of the air vents from the rooftop went off. You’re closest. Can you check on it?”

Ryan sighs and puts down his set of cards. “On our way. Which one is it?”

“The one next to elevator D. The first possible exit is the grill on the fourth floor.”

“Alright then. I’ll let you know when we get there.”

“Roger, Boss.”

Lester wished back the days when one had been appointed a role and then trusted they were capable of doing the job. But no, today there were leadership trainings. Lester looked down on his hands that were covered with dirt. Sowing seeds to prove they could assemble and grow a healthy team. This was ridiculous.

He looked at the others. Becker’s face was carefully blank, his frame tense. He was clearly out of his comfort zone. Matt, on the other hand, was smiling brightly and happily dug in the soil. It was clear who would succeed best in this task.

“Okay, okay. They’ve been taken out for inspection. They’ll be back tomorrow. Don’t worry, we still have the EMDs.”

“Matt, you can’t…” Becker’s strangled voice trailed off. He cleared his throat. “Matt, you can’t just decide to have all of our guns taken out and leave us just with these toys! You… You just can’t! I’m the fucking captain!”

Matt pushed him into the box and had barely closed the lid when the sound of the explosion rumbled through the shopping mall and down into the basement. It was louder than Connor had ever imagined. He felt an awkward pressure in his ears and then there was only silence.

He still felt slightly disoriented after the lack of oxygen followed by the rush down the stairs and the explosion. The lid was opened and he saw the relieved faces of Abby and Becker. Their lips were moving but he couldn’t hear a single word. His world had gone silent.
