It was a truth universally acknowledged that Connor was annoying.

He was nerdy. He was excitable. He regularly blurted out what he was thinking without a filter. He had a tendency to get obsessed with topics that interested him. He was socially awkward and his fashion choices were slightly eccentric.

He was annoying the people around him.

He knew that.

So he vowed that this year, he would change.

He'd restrain his excitement, put on a calm demeanour and only speak up when asked or if he had something substantial to contribute. He wouldn't harass everyone with what he was researching all the time and he would dress more casually and in muted colours. He wouldn't overwhelm the people around him with his personality.

He would become someone they would like and enjoyed having around. And maybe Cutter wouldn't look at him with disappointment in his eyes anymore.

„No.“

Ryan stepped between Cutter and the anomaly. He drew himself up to his full height, widened his stance, crossed his arms in front of his chest and narrowed his eyes, everything in his appearance telegraphing that he would not let anyone get past him.

„What do you mean 'no'? I am going through now. Let's go, Stephen.“ Cutter clearly didn't give a damn.

For the fraction of a second Ryan debated just letting him go. He was sick of playing babysitter to this overgrown toddler constantly throwing a tantrum because he couldn't play with his toys whenever he wanted. That man just didn't give a damn about the dangers that came along with the fucking anomalies.

Bloody idiot.

Stephen, who still stood back, looked hesitantly from the Scotsman to Ryan and back again. At least he got the message that Ryan was not fucking about with this.

„Stephen,“ Cutter commanded but the tracker only shrugged his shoulders.

„Sorry, Nick. Maybe we should sit this one out.“

He had loved the long debates, arguing about their own research and those of others. They had been able to agree to disagree and heated arguments had been followed by hot nights.

Those days were gone. This Helen, his Helen, was gone. When he last met her, he’d realized the only thing left in her soul was Darkness.

“Happy new year,” Nick mumbled to himself and raised his glass of whisky.

Eight years since Helen had disappeared. He had tried everything: TV, radio, newspapers, posters, searching the forest on his own, questioning locals, begging the police not to stop searching. But Helen was gone.

During the last months, he had realised it was time to move on, properly focus on his job again, rebuild friendships with those he hadn’t scared off completely, and allow himself to be happy again without the small voice telling him it was unfair to Helen. Hopefully, the new year would bring him peace.

I wanted to bring them to Germany, but I also wanted it to make sense for them to be there. I hope I succeeded. You decide! 😊

The team met at the airport to head off to Germany. Soon after the convergence when the anomalies had become public knowledge, Cutter and Connor had received an invitation to the next Senckenberg Conference in Frankfurt. Since the invitation had arrived, Cutter had been walking around proud like a peacock. The conference was titled “When past meets present – what the anomalies teach us about prehistory”, and he would not only deliver the key note - no, he would also be on the panel discussion with only a few other leading scientists. It was a late compensation for the fact that they hadn’t hired him for the summer digging in the Messel Pit when he had applied as a young and idealistic evolutionary zoologist.

Nick snorted when he stomped out of Lester’s office. Honestly? The bloody Minister wanted them to improve their international cooperation? They were a branch of the Home Office after all. If they wanted to provoke a nice little international scandal, they could certainly arrange that without him. And haven’t they had dodos from Mauritius, a Smilodon and Pteranodon from the Americas, a gorgonopsid that had lived in Africa, Russia and China, Embolotherium from Mongolia, Anurognathus from Germany, and last but certainly not least a Giganotosaurus that had made its way from Argentina? Who said they wouldn’t engage in international relationships?
