Marcus came to when the sun started to tickle his face. He snuffled a couple of times but the funny feeling in his nose wouldn't go away. Still half asleep, his own sudden sneeze startled him awake completely.

He took a moment to process the reality of a new day and then stretched lazily in his comfy basket and enjoyed the quiet for another a minute or two. Often enough, his rumbustious siblings would practically jump on him or paw his face before he had a chance to wake up on his own. Not today though. Kay and Alex were still snuggled up together and snoring, having made a fuss yesterday, looking forward to their trip.

Oh! Their trip!

Anticipation rose in Marcus and there was no way he could lie still any more. If he could get everyone up now, they could get going sooner!

Marcus was so looking forward to the weekend in the countryside that his parents had promised. They had been busy a lot lately, and often enough Marcus and his brother and sister were the last pups being picked up at daycare. It was really boring when the other pups had gone, especially when Liam had already been picked up.

Liam was great, even though he was an alpha. Most alphas were rough and roudy but Liam was always nice to him and left the best treats for Marcus. He was awesome.

Marcus was subdued by the thought that Liam wouldn't be coming with them for the weekend away but then he remembered that he would see him again at the nursery on Monday and they could share all their adventures then. That would be great!

Obviously, they would need to get going and have those adventures first.

With one last glance at his siblings, Marcus hopped out of his basket. He‘d better wake up his parents first. They always took so long, stuffing millions of things in bags and Marcus, Alex and Kay would wait for them for ages. Adults, ugh.

He nosed the door open a bit wider and pawed down the hallway to his parents‘ room. When he heard a funny noise coming from inside their room he stopped. Huh. It sounded almost like dad, his omega-dad that is, was groaning in pain. But how could he be? He was big and strong and nobody could hurt him. And also, papa was with him. Papa wouldn't let anyone hurt daddy or Marcus and his siblings. Papa could be really scary when he thought someone was threatening his family. Marcus had seen it. His mind still boggled at how his kind and loving alpha-father could transform into pure rage when  someone was mean to them.

Deciding to explore the situation and save his dad if need be, he stepped up to the door and sniffed the air. Weird. There was another soft grunt coming from inside. Papa maybe? He sounded like he did when he was lifting really heavy things. But the air coming from their room didn't smell like pain or exertion. It was more like... He wasn't quite sure. It was a strange mix of scents really. A bit like anticipation, a heavy dose of sweat, and a couple of other things he couldn't quite place. No fear or anger, though.

Curious to find out what was going on in there he wandered several steps back and then leaped up to pull the door handle down. He made it on the first try! Feeling victorious about his achievement he ran into the room and barked excitedly but then stopped in his tracks, confused.

His fathers scrambled to hide underneath their blanket and muttered something unintelligible that sounded suspiciously like the bad words that Uncle Joel and Uncle Jon had to put money in the swear jar for.

Also, they weren't lying next to each other, or even snuggled up really close, like they usually would in the morning, but papa was kneeling between his daddy's legs, and neither of them were wearing anything. Marcus had seen their skin. Weird. The sudden smell of embarrassment hit him and he wrinkled his nose. Sometimes adults were really strange.

And how dare they be awake and not be getting up ready for their trip?! That wouldn't do.

He bounded up onto their bed and scrambled onto his alpha-father's body, earning a choked out „Oof!“ when he slipped on his thighs and clambered to regain his balance. Finally he reached his papa's chest who was now huddled up next to dad. He stretched and started licking papa's face all over. He knew that he didn't like it much and that's exactly why he was doing it. He needed to get them out of the bed so that could leave already!

„Oh Marcus!“ his dad chuckled next to them and then gently pulled him off papa. Marcus wriggled in his grip but when he felt that daddy was cradling him against his torso, he just snuggled up to him and buried his snout in the comfy patch of fur in the middle of dad's  broad chest. He breathed in the soothing smell of his father and enjoyed being petted by one of his favourite people in the world. Only papa and grandpa could compete with dad snuggles.

„Oh, now he's all cuddly and quiet! And I get the paw to the groin!“ papa huffed and when dad only smirked smugly, papa rolled his eyes and leaned over the edge of the bed to pick up some pants from the floor.

Yay! They were finally getting up! Soon they could start having the best weekend ever!

This was the worst day in Marcus' life.

His parents had taken forever to get ready to leave. Marcus had first become slightly  inpatient, and then cranky. And then Kay tried to steal his favourite ball! He had just growled at her and hit her with his paw once to release the ball when of course papa appeared, and then he was the one being scolded even though Kay had started it. That had been so unfair!

Then they had finally left to drive out to the countryside but inside the car it had been hot and they hadn't been allowed to play but told to sit still. Marcus had never been that bored in his life. There were a lot of other cars around them, and they hardly ever moved forward and there was a lot of horn blaring that hurt his ears. At first, when he heard a siren approaching he was excited but when it came closer the volume was so loud that he whined and slapped his paws over his ears. He more felt than saw his dad twisting around in his seat in the front trying to comfort him and his siblings.

When the siren had gone, they still stayed there for ages before the car finally started moving again. Papa put music on and all five of them started singing along. That part was a lot of fun. Everyone knew that papa couldn't sing to save his life but that didn't stop him from belting out the lyrics and it was hilarious. But then the car stuttered and came to a stop again and the music was cut off.

Marcus wasn't quite sure what had happened but suddenly his dad was really annoyed at papa, and papa got a little angry and then they were shouting. Just a few sentences but it scared him. He didn't like it when his parents fought. He liked it a lot better when they were kind to each other and touched each other all the time or even did embarrassing things like kissing! Then dad grabbed him and his siblings and herded them about 100 metres into a field while papa stayed with the car, calling someone with the strange small machine that had voices coming out of it.

They had to stay there and dad wouldn't even let them run around and play, saying it was too dangerous so close to the road. Marcus thought that was stupid. The road was really far away! But dad had looked grumpy and tired, so he had laid down, barking at his siblings to follow his example. They did eventually and dad read a story to them while they were waiting. For what, Marcus still didn't know.

Just when he thought he was going crazy because of moving so little all day, a weird orange car stopped next to theirs. A man got out, old, with grey hair and a huge belly. Marcus' eyes almost bulged out at the sight. The man poured something from a weirdly shaped bottle into their car, shook hands with papa and took off again. Then dad gathered them all up in his arms and carried them back to their car. He got them settled inside the vehicle again, and then they continued their drive, the silence between his parents still somewhat icy.

Adults.

Best day ever!

After they arrived, their fathers carried their luggage into the cottage, just dropping it off in the living room so that they could pull out a few things and head out again right away. Of course, Marcus and his siblings helped, grabbing a toy each and carrying it inside. And they got a pig's ear as a reward. Yummie!

Marcus loved the house. There were so many exciting smells, corners and niches to explore. This was going to be like a treasure hunt! That would have to wait, though, until after their trek to a tiny waterfall a couple of miles away.

It was exhausting but their parents stopped once in a while to let Marcus, Kay and Alex run here and there, picking up scents and losing them again after few metres. It was fun. Everything smelled so different compared to the park or the garden at the nursery or at home.

When they reached the small waterfall, he and his siblings bounded into the water and played with the trickle coming from the rocks above their heads. It was hard to catch the water with their paws or tongue but Marcus managed. Kay on the other hand, yelped and ran back to their fathers when the small stream hit her head.

Marcus laughed at her and turned to play some more, but suddenly there was a big slimy creature in front of him. It stared right at him and huge balloons formed left and right from its mouth. It was terrifying! He froze, because surely something bad would explode right out of that scary beast. The balloons disappeared as soon as they came and then the thing started making the weirdest noise. Spooked, Marcus ran back to the shore and hid his face beneath his pa's thigh. Surely, his alpha father would protect him from the monster!

He heard papa and dad chuckle and came out of his hiding place with an offended bark. How dare they laugh at him! The green creature had clearly been out to kill him! He turned with his head held high to show them that he was not impressed with them when papa snagged him up and petted his head with soothing words.

Oh well, if he got cuddles, he'd forgive them this time. Papa-snuggles were awesome!

They enjoyed a small picnic and rested for a while before making their way back, stopping every so often to explore their surrounding. There was so much to discover, it was easily one of the most exciting days in his life!

This was an awful day.

They'd been walking for ages and Marcus' paws started to hurt from the rough forest floor. Finally, the cottage came into sight, the sun already low on the horizon. Marcus hoped they would make it back there before it got dark. It was still probably a thousand miles away!

Eventually, they reached the house and papa opened the door so that Marcus and his siblings could tumble in, fully intending to just flop down on the comfy rug in front of the fireplace. But after just a few steps inside they all three stopped and Alex let out a confused bark.

Marcus felt just the same – something was very wrong here. At first, he wasn't sure what it was but then he noticed it: The blankets and toys that had been placed in their sleeping baskets were thrown all over the place and even a few of their fathers' clothes had been ripped from their bag. Also, the cookie box that had sat on the coffee table was now lying on the floor, completely emptied of its contents.

With a very bad word, their pa scooped all three of them up at once and shouted dad's name. Just a half second behind them, dad immediately positioned himself in front of them to shield them from a potential attack. He was so brave! The bravest omega Marcus had ever met or even heard of. Marcus hoped that he would be just like him when he was older.

But for now, he was scared and let out a distressed whine. Pa pressed a kiss to his forehead and told them that everything would be alright. Marcus believed him. Their parents would always take care of them. Soothed, he relaxed in papa's arms a bit and huddled closer to his siblings.

With an order to stay back, dad followed a few crumbs on the floor to the kitchen area. Pa sat them back on the floor and told them to stay behind him, then he followed their omega father.

Marcus exchanged a worried glance with his siblings and they belly-crawled after their papa, not willing to let their parents face an unknown threat without their backup. Surely, they could help! Their parents told them all the time how big and strong they'd already gotten.

Meanwhile, dad had surrounded the kitchen island and let out a surprised shout, tumbling back and landing hard on his arse with a curse.

What was it with their parents and bad words today?

Before he could even finish the thought, a grey angry animal with a black mask on its face  jumped first at their dad and then bolted outside through the still open door, an annoyed chatter carrying through the air.

Oh my god, a bandit animal! It came in to steal their cookies and even wore a mask so that they wouldn't recognize it when they met it again in the woods!

Marcus barked excitedly. He could hardly wait to tell Liam about this adventurous trip! He and his siblings hopped around each other, one barking louder than the other.

Pa went to shut the door and started a sweep through the cottage so that they would now be safe from bandits while dad got up from the floor and rubbed his backside gingerly.

Once papa returned, they went to clear up the living area, Marcus and his siblings helped by dragging all the misplaced toys and blankets back to their baskets. When they were finished, they had another small meal and then snuggled up with their fathers on the couch. Dad read them a story and after a while Marcus felt himself nodding off.

What a day!
