“Happy new year,” Nick mumbled to himself and raised his glass of whisky.

Eight years since Helen had disappeared. He had tried everything: TV, radio, newspapers, posters, searching the forest on his own, questioning locals, begging the police not to stop searching. But Helen was gone.

During the last months, he had realised it was time to move on, properly focus on his job again, rebuild friendships with those he hadn’t scared off completely, and allow himself to be happy again without the small voice telling him it was unfair to Helen. Hopefully, the new year would bring him peace.
