Ryan had just taken the first sip of his beer when his phone rang. Damn thing. It had been a bloody long day because the creature of the day didn’t cooperate at all. He frowned when he saw Abby’s name on the display. They’d been on the same shift.

“Hey Abby.”

Sobbing.

“Abby? What’s up?”

There was more sobbing and harsh breathing while Abby tried to rein in her tears. Ryan straightened up, worried for real now.

“Abby? What’s the matter? I need you to tell me.”

“Ryan…”, Abby sniffled. “He’s been here. In my flat. The stalker.”

Ryan used to hate darkness. Even with the best equipment, it made his job so much more difficult and dangerous.

Lately, though, Ryan had learned to love the dark. Because at night, he was allowed to touch, to feel the swell of Becker’s belly beneath his hand.

At daytime, Becker would struggle with the visible proof of being an omega. In their free time Becker would hide his bump under too big shirts. At work, he constantly needed to prove himself and his capabilities, more to himself than anyone on the team.

So Ryan had learned to cherish the dark.

Lyle cracked one eye open and was greeted with a happy bark before Marcus continued to lick his face. The poking in his stomach would be Kay and Alex then. Hell, when had he fallen asleep? They’d played in the garden and he’d just sat down for a minute… Lyle carefully grabbed Marcus and sat up straight.

The laundry the captains had left on the drying rack was strewn across the lawn and no longer exactly clean. He heard the front door close, followed by footsteps. Oh crap.

“We’re ba…,” Ryan’s voice trailed off.

“It’s not my fault?” Lyle tried.

In the early morning sun, Ryan lay on his side watching Becker. He had been fading in and out of sleep all night, needing to reassure himself that the omega was still lying next to him. It was taking all of Ryan’s self-control not to touch and kiss Becker, but he knew that the omega had been running on empty and was now catching up on some much needed sleep. Ryan would get up in a few minutes and get the pups ready for nursery. Thank God Becker had not yet taken them out.

By the time they would have dealt with all the dinosaurs currently taking a walk around Green Park, they’d all be frozen solid. There was no way of putting on enough clothes to stay warm and yet be able to properly move. Ryan hated winter.

The next day, they had a call out to an anomaly in Tooting where a couple of Antarctopelta were blocking Tooting Broadway. It was beyond Becker how Jenny managed to keep the anomalies secret with things like that happening. They were trying to herd the dinosaurs back towards the anomaly when his phone rang. The display told Becker that it was his father. Shit, Allen calling could only mean that something was up with the pups.

“Hey Dad. Is everything okay with the pups?”

“Hilary. I am sorry to call. I know you’re at work right now.” The pups were whining in the background. Becker’s heart clenched.

Ryan flopped down on Dan’s couch, stretching his legs and nursing a can of beer. He and Becker had decided that Ryan would have the pups on Saturday and Sunday, so that he could spend time with them before he left for his mission. They were now sleeping on the bed in Dan’s spare room, where Ryan had taken camp. Dan sipped on his beer and watched him carefully.

“What?” Ryan said with a raised eyebrow.

“You need to talk to him.”

“Huh?” Ryan looked surprised.

“Becker. You need to talk to him.”

Ryan sighed. “I can’t. And what for? He made it quite clear that he doesn’t want me around at the moment.” He swallowed.

Ryan stared after Becker. This had gone terribly wrong. Somehow Becker seemed determined to misunderstand every word Ryan had wanted to say. But he would be damned if he was going to run after him now. When had all this become so fucking complicated?

Later that day, Ryan was catching up with some outstanding paperwork. When he had come in to take over from Becker, his omega had barely looked at him while reporting what had happened during his shift. Becker had left the room as soon as possible.

Ryan’s phone was beeping, and he picked it up to read the text. It was from Becker.

I think we should take a few days to get our heads around it. Maybe you could stay with Dan for a few days? I’ll stay in the house with pups then.

The SUVs came to a screeching halt on the tattered tarmac. The ADD had picked up a signal in the countryside in Cambridgeshire. Becker jumped out of the car and stopped dead as soon as he turned towards the direction of the signal. He heard his squad and the two civilians get out of the cars. As soon as they had turned towards the anomaly, they stood still just like Becker.

The pups were playing in the garden, and Ryan stood up to get a cuppa. Becker was on duty, and Ryan sorted receipts for their tax returns hoping Becker would clean up the attic in turn. Not that Ryan was afraid of spiders.

Excited barking filled the house, followed by the sound of papers flying through the air. Ryan raced into the living room to find the pups whirling around each other like a tornado, all documents scattered across the floor. “Stop it,” he thundered. The pups froze. “You’re going to help me clean this up!” The pups barked happily.
