By the time Becker had to leave for his night shift on Monday, he had worked himself into near-panic. He hated to admit it, but even though they had lived apart for a week, Ryan’s presence at the ARC had filled him with a feeling of safety. Now Ryan was gone, and he was an unmated omega in a world of alphas and betas, most of them trained for combat and perfectly aware of their mental and physical strength. He didn’t worry about Blade and Finn or the others in his team, but he wasn’t quite sure about some of the other staff.

Ryan stared after Becker. This had gone terribly wrong. Somehow Becker seemed determined to misunderstand every word Ryan had wanted to say. But he would be damned if he was going to run after him now. When had all this become so fucking complicated?

Later that day, Ryan was catching up with some outstanding paperwork. When he had come in to take over from Becker, his omega had barely looked at him while reporting what had happened during his shift. Becker had left the room as soon as possible.

Ryan’s phone was beeping, and he picked it up to read the text. It was from Becker.

I think we should take a few days to get our heads around it. Maybe you could stay with Dan for a few days? I’ll stay in the house with pups then.

The SUVs came to a screeching halt on the tattered tarmac. The ADD had picked up a signal in the countryside in Cambridgeshire. Becker jumped out of the car and stopped dead as soon as he turned towards the direction of the signal. He heard his squad and the two civilians get out of the cars. As soon as they had turned towards the anomaly, they stood still just like Becker.
